It’s summer time and my face is ever changing with the hotness and the humidity here in New York City. So, I’m always on the hunt to find tricks of the trade to put my best face forward, no matter what the weather. To get us all looking our best, we’ve asked the lovely, Shannon Jones, skin-care specialist at the Exhale Spa in New York City for some advice on how to get you beautiful all year long. What kind of foods are good to eat for the skin, to get that bridal glow?

The best diet for healthy skin includes plenty of fruits and vegetables to get those antioxidants in. Also, I love foods high in Omega 3s, like avocado and salmon. You can actually moisturize your skin from the inside out. I find that drinking water is really helpful for the clarity of the skin, but it’s impossible to drink enough water to hydrate it. So don’t skip your hydrating serum!

Beauty tips…

Get sleep and eat your veggies.  Wash your makeup off at night. Sorry, a makeup remover wipe on its own is not enough! Wear sun protection. Eighty percent of aging is caused by sun damage, so protecting your skin is the best thing you can do to keep the wrinkles and brown spots away.

Favorite makeup tips…

I am a firm believer in good concealer, a bronzer, and a highlighter. I focus on my skincare so that I don’t need to use a lot of foundation. I love a soft highlighter because it can fake that “lit-from-within” glow, which disappears so quickly if you are stressed or don’t get enough sleep.

I use bronzer year-round in order to get a little color and contour, especially since I always wear sunscreen and don’t get it naturally. I think it’s also really important to have well-shaped brows, since they frame the eyes and give a little definition. Favorite makeup products…

Makeup-wise, I love the YSL Faux Cils mascara. It has the best brush and you get volume and length. I love the BeneFit High Beam highlighter… nothing helps you fake a glow faster than that. I love Tarte cheek stains. My favorite is Blushing Bride, which is more berry than pink. All of these products can be found at Sephora.

Beauty essential, secret weapon?

I firmly believe in the power of Vitamin C! It builds collagen, protects from free radical damage, boosts radiance, promotes circulation, and can even lighten pigmentation. I also love retinol. Retinol is great for texture, fine lines, and pigmentation. It can be aggressive if you overuse it (and most people do), but once or twice a week, it’s a miracle worker… even for more sensitive types.

I also swear by my RevitaLash Advanced lash conditioner, which we sell at exhale. My lashes were amazing when I was using it just a few times a week! Totally worth the investment.

Skincare philosophy…

Everyone can have great skin, and at any budget. You just have to take the time to figure out which ingredients work for you.

Favorite getaway spot

Anything on the beach! Slather on some sunscreen and I’m happy.

Favorite recipe

I am gluten free, so I live on quinoa salads, especially in the summer. My favorite recipe is a quinoa salad with black beans, avocado, and grapefruit.

You love to….

Outside of giving facials and trying out new products, I love to cook, eat, and drink wine. I’m a pretty adventurous eater…I’ll try anything once! I also love photography.
